The Society offers or co-host workshops for health care professionals, caregivers and others.

Demystifying Dying... Re-engaging with Life on a Deeper Level

Dr. Kay Costley-White’s two-day Demystifying Dying workshop explores the emotional, cultural, social, physical and legal issues we face for our own dying, for the death of a loved one and for the death of those we care for in a professional capacity.

Processes include instruction, sharing and group discussion, videos and readings, and time for quiet reflection. Living Will documents and handouts will be provided.

Subjects include:

  • Personal and cultural attitudes to death
  • Responses to the threat of death
  • Unpacking hopes and fears
  • Anticipating loss and grief
  • Helping families and loved ones cope
  • How to be with, and talk to, someone who is dying
  • Care for the caregiver
  • Near-death awareness
  • Resuscitation
  • Spiritual challenges as death approaches
  • Ritual
  • A brief history of the hospice movement
  • Symptoms of severe illness and the dying process
  • Palliative care: how symptoms may be managed at home, in hospital or hospice
  • Legal issues relating to wills and advance directives

Dates of next two-day workshop: November 21-22, 2009 from 9:00am to 5:00pm

Workshop Cost: $120 per participant

Accommodation and Meals: $130 per participant which includes snacks, lunches, one night’s accommodation and breakfast. If accomodation is not required, lunches and snacks are $30 for the two days.
